For the second time this month a company in Puerto Rico is recalling a meat product shipped to schools and other institutional kitchens in the territory because of a complaint about metal pieces.

This time it’s Ganaderos Borges Inc. of Naguabo, Puerto Rico. The company is recalling almost 14,800 pounds of pork patty products, according to a recall notice posted by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

“The problem was discovered, and FSIS was notified, on Nov. 2 when the firm received a consumer complaint from a school that received the product,” according to the recall notice. “While the product was distributed to schools, it resulted from a commercial sale and was not part of food provided by the USDA for the National School Lunch Program.”

On Nov. 1 the FSIS posted a very similarly worded recall notice for 2,400 pounds of ready-to-eat corned beef after complaints from schools about extraneous plastic and metal. Procesadora La Hacienda Inc. of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, was the recalling company.

The pork patties from Ganaderos Borges Inc. that are affected by the recall posted Nov. 6 were produced Oct. 26 and have an expiration date of Nov. 16. They also all have the establishment number “EST. M32170” printed inside the USDA mark of inspection printed on their labels.

The recalled pork patties are packaged in 10-pound cardboard boxes containing 54 patties of 3 ounces each. Ganaderos Borges Inc. distributed all of the recalled pork patties to institutional kitchens in Puerto Rico.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in institutional freezers,” according to the recall notice. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

The FSIS routinely conducts effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers about recalled food and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Sarai Orozco, quality control manager of Ganaderos Borges Inc. at 787-354-9777.
